Cooling effect of sun panels on dark roofs

Many new developments in Melbourne suffer from lack of trees to cool yards and houses during the heat of summer. First thing is to plant trees, but an interesting side-effect of having solar panels on a dark roof is that they reflect a certain amount of heat away from the roof and the space beneath the panels acts as a wind tunnel. I have certainly noticed this at my house and have checked the science behind it because I thought I may have imagined the effect.
